Question by Sparky: What are your thoughts on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s reason for Communist revolution?
He said that they forgot God. Your thoughts?

At the time Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize he was asked the question, “What made it possible for the Russian Revolution to take place and for Communism to rise to power?”
Solzhenitsyn’s reply was simple and direct: “Men forgot God.”

The Church was seen as a tool to control the proletariat by both Marx and Lenin. I think that Solzhenitsyn's statement is simplistic, though. The reason for the Communist revolution was more than just men "forgetting God". There were great inequalities in Russia at the time, under a corrupt, anachronistic, autocratic monarchy.

I think he was wrong. I don't think god, or a lack thereof, had anything to do with the Russian Revolution, or the rise of Communism, and Solzhenitsyn's personal opinion on the matter has no bearing on the truth. The suppression of religion was not a cause of the Soviet Union, it was a symptom of their need for total control of the populace.
