Question by Kalibasa: What do you think of Anna Netrebko’s voice?
I just feel that she’s a little overrated. At least she’s a real opera singer! (unlike Brightman and other pop divas), but somehow I don’t think her voice is that pretty. There’s something almost- stuffy?- and shrill about it. (I really can’t find the word, but it just doesn’t seem right).
What do you all think? Is this just me?

Tennis? Um… I know there are a lot of Russian tennis players, but this is a little ridiculous!

I think she is definitely overrated. Her voice is just sort of ordinary. Shes good- well trained but I cant say I particularily like her timbre.

What do you think?

Her technique is not great. Particularly her phrasing, but I think the timbre of her voice is gorgeous. But that is (of course) a matter of personal taste. Her timbre is quite dark and it is perhaps the heaviness to it that makes it seem "stuffy" to you. I think, perhaps, static would be a better word to describe it. There isn't much vibrancy to it but I think this is because of its dark, velvety qualities which I, personally, enjoy. But that certainly doesn't mean everyone has to. It also has a certain… for lack of a better word, "fullness" to it that I think sacrifices expression. She focuses much more on maintaining a resonant sound than she does on communicating the music. Fullness isn't really the right word, but I think you'll know what I mean, based on your comment about it's "stuffyness." I think her voice would be best suited to simply singing sustained notes. She sings notes beautifully ; )
I definitely wouldn't describe her voice as shrill, however… Callas always had a shrillness to her voice but I, again, enjoy the earthy quality of her voice. It always came off as more sincere to me. She was also unparalleled in her emotional interpretation. It's funny, I like Kiri Te Kanawa and I always thought of Netrebko's timbre as somewhat similar to Kanawa's. Netrebko's is just quite a bit darker. Maybe it's Netrebko's technique you don't like? I admit, it definitely leaves something to be desired.
Give her some time. I think that in ten or twenty years she'll be an excellent singer.

She's beautiful, and this is the reason of her success. Other singers were beautiful (e.g. Moffo or Schwarzkopf) but they also knew how to sing.
Netrebko has a good instrument, but she lacks technique and her interpretations are flat and boring.

She's not one of my favourite singers, I'll say that much. But I can't pinpoint what exactly it is about her voice that doesn't warm to me. Maybe it's the timbre…somehow there doesn't seem to be much variation in the way she sings each song.
Interestingly, although many consider Renee Fleming to be better than Netrebko, there's also something about Renee's voice that I don't quite like. It's sort of the same feeling actually. I always still go back to Kiri Te Kanawa or Mirella Freni for full-lyric voices. Edita Gruberova for coloratura.
I felt she should have taken the tempo for 'Quando men vo' a little faster…the tempo that she's currently taking makes it sound a bit too stuffy.

Why don't you post a link, so we can hear her? Must be something on You Tube, if no where-else.

Thanks. Not bad; not great either. Perhaps we all have come to expect to much of new singers nowadays. Would like to come across a question by one of you ladies regarding a singer you think is really great( and why?). How about it?

I agree with you… she is just another case of a "pretty" singer that is over publicized, and hyped-up. At least she can sing though… Perhaps this is like Callas (good technique but disgusting voice)?
EDIT:
musicyh, I also dont like Renee Flemming very much, but more because she has weird diction that her timbre. In some roles (The Countess in le nozze) she is ok, but in others…. I could shoot her. I have never heard a worse rendition of "When I am laid in Earth" than hers….
and like you, I adore Kiri Te Kanawa… for coloraturas though I like Sumi Jo.
