most rural people depending on how isolated they are have never seen a black person in real life. expect to get stared at. as for racism chances are you will only experience it in urban areas.

I see people of African descent around Moscow not infrequently – there are a number of people at my church service who are from Africa. I think Russia is very multinational. The only thing I heard of was that a teacher from my school who was Black and from the UK's neighbors called the police about a Chechen moving in. It was clear they had never seen a Chechen, and it all worked out okay. I think Moscow over St. Petersburg for racism (more people = greater exposure) and once you get into the rural areas, well, in European Russia you may be an oddity but in Siberian Russia there are lots of non-Russian-ethnicity Russians, so I think it will be okay. I hope you have a good trip!

I wouldn't go to the rural areas, especially without a tour group, travelling individually… If you really interested in going, go to a big city and stay with a tourist group at all times. Don't travel alone, especially in the evenings…

The few black people I would see on the Moscow metro, kept well covered-up for safety reasons. I honestly wouldn't advise traveling alone, particularly by train in the evenings.
With the right precautions, you can still enjoy your visit to the major cities. Rural areas would be more challenging.
