Question by Cap’n Waldo Starbuck: What is the best tasting imported Russian Beer?
I was in Russia in a 2000, and tasted a few Russian brews. I haven’t checked, but wanted to know if any Russian beer is imported to America?

I’d have to say Baltika 6 and 8. I’d tried one of their older offerings several years back and was not impressed, but found these on my most recent trip to NYC about a year ago. They were really pretty good. One’s a porter, the other a wheat beer. I don’t remember which was which. Damn stupid numerical naming system!

I have to disappoint you. Only Baltikas 3 & 7 are to be found in average U.S. liquor stores. Both are medium quality lager beers, really nothing fancy.
There are 2 things to brighten up your life. 🙂 Stores in Russian community districts (think N.Y. Brooklyn) may carry wider variety. Other beers from the region are available in average stores – and they are truly much better. Look for Ukrainian Obolon and Polish Zywiec, in particular.
