WITH all the help from the other allies, the Germans still got to 20 miles from Moscow…one day’s march. If Moscow would have fallen, Game Over on the eastern front.
It was very, very close. But once the Germans retreated from Moscow, lost Stalingrad and Kursk, then it was all over and they never had another chance.
Yak Rider says
No, not a chance. With all the extra forces that were pinned down on the Western Front he would have finished the Soviets in the first months of the war and they never would have had a chance to bring up their forces from Asia or develop better armor forces.
greg says
You mean if it was just the Soviet Union vs Germany? No, Germany would have took the Soviets to the cleaners. Even with American, British, French, and other Allied nations help, the Soviets were having a hard time defending against the Germans. Stalin asked Roosevelt and Churchill many times to open a “western front” where Hitler’s forces would be distracted, like in Northern Africa or western Europe. While the Americans were taking care of the Japanese in the Pacific, the Europeans and Americans had a hard time defending against the Germans and Italians (Italy had a weak army though). In fact, the Allies lost a lot of the early battles, but they were able to gradually build momentum as the war went on because the Germans slowly ran out of resources which led to low German morale towards the end of the war when German defeat was all but inevitable. The problem for the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) was that they lacked coordination because Hitler, Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito never coordinated attacks or plans, while Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin were willing to set aside their differences to defeat the Axis powers.
The only 2 reason the Soviets were able to survive against the Germans were: (1) American help, and (2) the Soviets were very good at defending, hiding, and weakening and stretching out the Germans. The Soviets were fighting in their home country and felt a lot of pride about defending “Mother Russia” so they were extremely patriotic as well. They hid in secret spots and camped a lot because they knew the terrain so well and gradually wore down the Nazis. It also helped that Russia gets extremely cold, so Hitler’s army was fighting not only the Soviets on the eastern side, but Americans and British on the western side, and the cold too.
Connor says
No they most likely would have lost because they were not as well armed. If you look at even the battles they won they were all pyrrhic victories. The COD kid is right that they out numbered the germans by a lot but they were still being pushed back because they had no morale (probably because they were getting killed) and had lots of desertion and If Germany was not fighting a multiple front war, would have easily been able to take the outdated russian army.

Ofcourse.. obvious answer…
lana_sands says
Nope.
Lacked the arms & resources. We had to ship them planes, guns & Supplies to stay in the war.
jeeper_peeper321 says
No, people seem to forget the massive amount of Lend Lease aid the US provided to the Soviets during the war.
tens of thousands of aircraft, trucks, weapons, ammunition, food, blankets, oil, gasoline, trains
Without all that aid, the Soviets would have not lasted long enough to be able to go on the offensive or be able to develop the T-34 tank
xUchiha says
Yes they would of,
The out numbered the germans 10-1
