The closest we ever came was the Cuban missile crisis. The Soviets did send pilots to both North Korea and Vietnam to “advise”.

neither side was really interested in playing the "oh look you have 30 million more dead than me" game".
but some of the details now coimg out about the Cuban missile crisis are mind-boggling.
it was almost WW3.

cuz neither wanted to be reduced to glowing ruins. it was safer to fight through proxies.
