Yes.
He could have been just another Chernyenko. Bucking the communist party in those days took guts.

i don't know… how much credit is he getting?
i'll tell you who doesn't get enough credit for bringing down the iron curtain, and that's pope john paul 2… everybody in america likes to point to reagan's one speech ("mister gorbachev, tear down this wall!") as being the catalyst, while utterly ignoring the quiet, behind-the-scenes diplomatic work of the vatican throughout the '80's. while not entirely responsible for the soviet union's collapse, i'm convinced his influence helped the transition to be relatively non-violent.

Not really, he should have embraced a modern communism in Russia etc rather than allow Russia and Eastern Europe go into meltdown and civil war. Now we have Russian Multi Billionaires that have accumulated so much in a short period of time, and the poor are poorer.

Yes of course he does.
If he wanted Communism to stay in Eastern Europe the Berlin wall would be standing today.

Reagan deserves a lot of the credit the left gives Gorbachev, however, he was the one Russian that saw the light. (that losing the cold war was better than continuing it)
