Question by 少林 Yoda: Vladivostok—Worth a visit?
Hi, I’m an American, I studied Russian in college, but since then I’ve lived in Japan, and have not yet had the chance to visit Russia, which is a dream of mine. Moscow and Petersburg are on the other side of the world, but Vladivostok is just north of Japan.
I’d like to go and hang around for a few days, practicing my Russian and uh…..um… I haven’t really researched this part yet.
Is there anything to do? Is it safe? Do people speak Russian there, or are there other languages as well?
I know I could just google it and be done with it, but I’d like to see if anyone here has a personal experience or if a Russian person familiar with the area had some insight.
Thanks.

if you need a “Russia fix” then it’s worth going to, otherwise there are better cities to visit. The real tourist season makes it impractical for most people to go, and when you get there the touristy things are very limited. I’ve been there several times on business and tried to get out as quickly as possible.
Yes, the main language spoken is Russian, and the people are indeed very Russian. Because of your location, it might be a great place to go. A suggestion though, if you speak Russian you’ll be in great shape if you don’t it will be difficult to get around. You might want to get a guide from a local Russian travel agency.

russian is the spoken language in all of russia, including vladivostok. honestly tourist visits to russia are dangerous, people who go there and act like foreigners have been victims of brutal beatings and many cases death. if you do go there just act like you belong there and know where you are going.
with that being said there is alot of things to do there, especially in a large city such as vladivostok.
