In February 1945 while serving in East Prussia he was arrested for criticising Joseph Stalin in private correspondence with a friend and sentenced to an eight-year term in a labour camp, to be followed by permanent internal exile.

The previous answer is technically correct, but the actual charges against the man stated that he was a "provocateur" (Russian equivalent) and therefore a danger to the state. I actually got to visit one of his homes in Russian when I was there in 1972. Sadly, it had not been maintained too well (real surprise.)
