Question by Max Uijtenhaak: Any good books to learn about the history of Soviet Russia?
I recently read a book on the birth of Chinese communism and how it progressed. Essentially I’m looking for something similar for the history of Soviet Russia.
I don’t want anything too in-depth – just the fundementals so I have a basic understanding, perhaps which I can build upon afterwards. My preffered style is narrative – biographical history. So history told through those that experienced it happen – unlike textbook history.
Any idea’s would be great – many thanks.

Depends on what aspect of Soviet Russia you want.
'Stalinism' by Graeme Gill is good if you want to look at Stalin's policies and is some what easy to read.
Anything by the historian Robert Conquest, particularly 'The Great Terror' and 'Harvest of Sorrow' they are in depth but are very good and eye opening. Conquest includes first hand accounts especially in the 'Harvest of Sorrow'
Hope it helps.
