Question by teejayniles: Have you read Alexander Solzhenitsyn short story or novel?
The Russian expatriate was world-renowned but probably not very much included in recent “reading-lists” – – did you read him because you had to or because you wanted to?
the novelist who died today was able to return to his native land decades ago is not technically an “expatriate” – – sorry

I read The Gulag Archipelago (or at least half of it) because I wanted to. I regret it to this day. Too depressing for me, mostly because it was true.

I've read them all, most of them twice. I'm old though and most of my reading isn't required by anyone but me. Solzhenitzyn has always been a favorite of mine, both for the quality of his writing and for his ability to show me a world which I am immensely grateful never to have had to experience in person. He was not only a genius, he was a remakably courageous man. We were fortunate to have had him.
