I read Anna Akhmatova in the original, I think she is pretty good compared to others. Women like her so much. But the fact is that I dislike poetry, it is like prostituting your feelings, isn’t it? Poets strip themselves to the bone, when every thought, every longing and every feeling of theirs is laid bare for the public. How can they sell their poetry for money?

Anna didn't leave. She used her writing to speak about her suffering, and the Russian intelligensia's lot after the revoloution. SHe lost so much. She went from a bohemian lifestyle to cleaning the streets. Still she wrote…she was "with my people then, there where my people were doomed to be." I believe she is a poet of witness… of rememberence. If you like what you have read of hers check out…Bella Akhadulina especially the poem SIlence.
