Because Russian's are weirdos and for some reason they don't like boys and girls in the same family to have the same last names. Weirdo's!

"Safina" is the feminine form of "Safin".

In eastern European countries (particularly Russia and former Soviet republics and russian speaking countries), they always feminize the family name for a girl.

    (ie: Sharapov/Sharapova; Kuznetsov/Kuznetova; Dementiev/Dementieva; Myskin/Myskina; Petrov/Petrova; etc)

If Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Nikolay Davydenko had sisters, there last names would be Kafelnikova and Davydenkova.

Russian last names act like other nouns and change with gender. Maria Sharapova's father's/brother's name would be Sharapov, etc.
