The AK family of weapons is the most produced firearm in history – some estimates say that 1 out of every 5 military rifles in the world are AKs, and 3/4ths of those are AK-47s. They are cheap, they are simple and reliable and not prone to wearing out so they tend to be very common.
The child soldiers, incidentally, are no joke. There is a reason why militants actively recruit those kids.

Well during the Cold War (specifically the 1950-80s) the race between the USA and the USSR was at it's largest, the Soviet Union went into a mass production of the Kalashnikov (AK-47). In total over 100 million Kalashnikovs were made It was not hard for people to get their hands on one of these rifles. All you had to do was say that you hated America, and the Soviets would literally throw Kalashnikovs in your direction. The Soviet Union made over 100 million of these and they don't really use it anymore, so where do you think all those 100 million rifles go? Not to mention that Africa was one of the Soviet Union's largest exporters in small arms, plus the fact that Africa has been plagued by war since the 1960s; all these factors add up,
When you have an unstable government such as the ones in Africa, it's not hard for you to get your hands on these weapons, estimates show that around 10-30 million Kalashnikovs (AK-47s) are currently in use by terrorists and/or civilians (that specifically includes Africa)

If I were a greedy country, I would want to exploit that entire continent without having to rule it myself.
I want that Nigerian oil.
I want those South African diamonds.
I want that ivory.
As long as that entire continent is in the Third World, I can get what I want pretty cheaply.
Perhaps I can give away some guns, and send them some dope and alcohol, so those people will never become a threat to my own nation. I'll just pay off those warlords who care nothing for their own people.
