Question by samswainuk: How dangerous is it driving in Russia?
I’ve read the road trip russia bible ‘The Linger Longer: Driving the Trans-Siberian’, but how dangerous is it driving in russia in a really nice car? Will my SUV get stolen? I want to do a road trip from Germany to Moscow, but don’t want any surprises.
Is it ok to drive in Russia? I’ve heard they have a very high accident rate. I’m also concerned about crime in Russia. If anyone has driven in russia, or can give me some advise it would massively appreciated?

Winter is considerably more dangerous for obvious reasons. Road quality varies and overtaking on long single road stretches is the biggest cause of accidents. City centre driving is often aggressive and police stops and ‘fines’ for no reason are common.
Nice cars are two-a-penny in Russian cities. A foreign plate might get unwanted attention in remoter regions, but not on your route to Moscow.

This Russian joke should illustrate one of the problems:
A Russian driver, Ukrainian driver, Belarussian driver and Bulgarian driver are each sitting at an intersection waiting for the light to change. The light malfunctions and there is a crash.
It's an international crisis with 4 drivers from 4 different countries.
The Russian police arrive and soon determine who was at fault.
The American.
