How did Josef Stalin exploit the illness and death of Lenin?

Question by me: How did Stalin exploit the illness and death of Lenin?
there’s something about trotsky being on a train south, and stalin telling him that there wasn’t time for him to return to the funeral, even though there was plenty of time. and something about the speech stalin made at the funeral.

Stalin told Trotsky the wrong date for Lenin’s funeral to increase his chances of being chosen to succeed Lenin. Before he died, Lenin had drawn up a list of pro’s and con’s of potential successors and Stalin found out about it. He did it, as he thought if Trotsky did not turn up for Lenin’s funeral it would seem like he did not feel as strongly about Lenin’s death as himself.

Stalin made sure that Lenin was surrounded by his own informants, who kept Stalin informed of everything Lenin did. Stalin also tapped Lenin's phone. While Lenin was ill, Stalin was able to consolidate more power into his own hands by appointing his own supporters to key positions.

One of the ways Stalin was able to change history and make himself seem as Lenin's natural successor was to doctor photographs. He used airbrush techniques to remove his competitors from photos with Lenin, leaving only himself as the "right hand man."
