Question by : How did military superpower, “first-in-space” USSR become the backward, failing society it is today?
Within 30 years after the USSR’s creation, it was already challening the might of the United States. it was the first in space, a military and economic superpower, and excelled in the sciences.
Today: rabid “slavic nazis” (oxymoronic morons) roam the cities drunk and high on glue, harassing guest workers. no real scientific output anymore, faltering economy, the failure of Putin to contain the situation today…
…What Happened?

the soviet union was run the way most democrats seem to dream about how to run this country. everyone worked for the government. everyone made the same income and had the same status in society. no matter how hard they worked. so there was no reason to be imaginative and invent anything because you did not get rewarded. there was no reason to work hard or do anything for yourself because the government took care of everything. if you dropped out of school and worked at mcdonalds, you pretty much made the same money and had the same life as the guy that went to 8 years of college and became a doctor, so why bother.

Russia is doing better than Canada really. It is just that Russia doesn’t let it’s citizens max out credit cards and live in million dollar homes with no down payment.

It failed because it was rotten from the get go. It was never good. Communism and socialism are wrong, simply put, and only lead to failure. Any military might or scientific knowledge was a sham, a mask for a country that was in ruin. The same is true of North Korea. They have a glittering military, but I’ve heard that some citizens are so hungry they are trying to cook tree bark as a way of getting food.

They were never really technically competitive, they take a sledgehammer approach to science, and sometimes that works.
But in a system that mimics union protections and incentives to every worker, who is going to work hard?
