That is a question that has been fiercely debated over the years. No one is sure how Rasputin did it. Lots of theories abound – including hypnotism. The secret went to the grave with Rasputin.

Be wary of a lot of sites written about Rasputin. There are a lot of crackpot theories floating about concerning his cure. It’s best to say “It’s not known how he healed Alexis” or “There are a lot of theories about this miracle cure, but no one really knows how it was done”.

Finally found the page I was looking for. The link takes you to a decent page that gives a good run down on Rasputin’s influence on the Royal family. It also puts forward a credible theory about hypnosis and how it may actually have calmed Alexis enough to fall asleep. It’s not 100%, so again don’t use it as the definitive explanation. Just a more credible theory than most.
