How did Stalin gain political power anyways?

Question by wsa23899: How did Stalin gain political power anyways? During the time, the bolsheviks were in power right?
Wasn’t Trotsky the leader of the Boksheviks after the death of Lenin? What role did Stalin play during this time? How was he able to rise above trotsky?

Probably because Trotsky got an ax in the head. Many of Stalin’s enemies found themselves either dead or in Siberia.

Trotsky was very arrogent and made a lot of enemies within the Communist party leadership. Those people used Stalin, whom they always underestimated, as an ally against Trotsky, then they started to turn on each other. Wnenever one of them would start to look like they were getting the most power, the others would start working against them, and Stalin always joined that group until eventually, he became the strongest.

With his 1922 appointment to the key position as secretary-general to the Central Committee of the Communist Party, Stalin was able to build up his power to control the party apparatus. that would ensure he would control the situation when Lenin died. When this happened in 1924, he successfully put this to the test and took over the reins of power. In 1928 he engineered Trotsky's disgrace and banishment. It was not until 1940 that Stalin succeeded in having Trotsky assassinated.
