How did the Afghan-Soviet war bring about the USSR collapse?

Question by : How did the Afghan-Soviet war bring about the Soviet Unions collapse?
How did the Afghan war bring about the Soviet Unions collapse, i’ve always heard the Soviets kept fighting a war they couldn’t win till they were financially drained and destroyed economically. Is that a true assessment? How is America doing differently in the Afghan war? Is America benefiting financially, or prospering economically regardless of the war?

It was a big factor. the USSR already had a bad economy and was running out of money fast, then they decide to have a war with a country and kept pumping money into the war and wound up running out of money even faster

Many thing brought about the collapse of the old USSR the main reason was Mr Reagan however the wars are a little under 6% of our total expenditures very doable and even that figure is misleading the troops get paid sitting at base or out in the field fighting

    That is a huge oversimplification.

The war in Afghanistan was only a small part of the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Their entire system was broken, no longer economically viable in any way. They lost control over many of the Warsaw Pact nations, lost the public relations war, were condemned and pressured for decades by the Catholic Church, unable to keep up with Western military technology…. and still had to try to feed their population (and were failing miserably).

The U.S. is bleeding money in Afghanistan just like the soviets did…. but none of the other stuff is true of the United States at this time.

The Soviet “war” in afghanistan is a lot like what we’re doing now. Fighting against tribes and guerrilla fighters in an attempt to prop up an unstable puppet government. It doesn’t work. Afghanistan is the one country on this planet that cannot be conquered.
