The Cuban Missile Crisis painted his image as a warmonger. The Soviet govt did not want a war with the West and thus he was removed from power to prevent a conflict from happening.
He tried taking a hard stance against the west (read: The Cuban Missile Crisis), but it backfired, and he had to back off. And while he got what he wanted (Kennedy agreed to remove the american ballistic missiles from Turkey,) he came out of it looking bad, and was eventually forcefully retired from office, thus losing all his power.
