Wave2012 says
Actually originally all the territory around Moscow and many places around (including one more country to the west – Belarus) is one huge marshland. Probably you have heard about wild fires around Moscow last year and the main reason why they were so dangerous were peat bogs, when they cannot be put out easily with just water and fire smoulders deep inside while it is invisible on the surface. That why they also had very toxic smog because of pead.
In spring and summer they become lakes because of melting snow or rains and territory becomes almost impassable (of course, not now, but in past, for example).
Last 100 years they struggle with bogs (and destroy local ecosystems unfortunately).
