What would be the cheapest and easiest way to get from Tokyo to Moscow or St Petersburg, Russia?

Take Aeroflot to Moscow, but do try to take the overnight train to St. Petersburg. You can get an affordable comfortable, sleeper car—it's quite a nice experience. The trains are very funky and old-fashioned.
