First and foremost, start studying the Russian language. In my opinion, you cannot and will not ever fully understand or appreciate Russian culture and what it means to be Russian without knowing the language. Second, nearly all large cities have Russian communities; your Russian language teacher can probably point you in the right direction for finding these communities and immersing yourself in them. Third, find groups or organizations whose central theme is related to Russia in whatever aspect – through this way you’ll find like-minded friends as well as Russian friends. The next step, once you know at least some passable Russian, would be to actually visit Russia.
You mentioned in another question that you were adopted from Orphanage #3 in SPb. I’ve seen Orphanage #3 before, many years ago – it was the building next to one that I had some sort of business in. It’s been so long, I don’t remember why I was in the area in the first place…

You might want to find some people in your city that are Russian. They can help you form a comfortable idea of the Russian culture. Although, if you feel a bit too shy, then you can always opt to take a Russian culture class or even learn to speak Russian, so that way you can go visit the country some day.

I think it is absolutely enough for the beginning. When you’re done, start reading books of Russian authors, listen to Russian music, learn Russian language. It’s very difficult, but you’ll succeed. Good luck!!!

Irw, your way of.
Average Russian makes about 200$ a month, thy are temperament and passionate. If you want to see culture, then you have to see past effects of 1 “stakan” (200ml tea glass) of vodka that is consumed daily.
Thy drive crappy cars, etc.
If you speak Russian, thy are usually friendly, if not, it will be threated as a malfunction. Funny thing about Russians is that thy have Their timeline, and everyone who does not believe it is a fascist. Something like – radio was created by Popov not Edison etc.
I guess it might be obvious who “pretty” girls will be in Russia at age 16, just little thing with that is – against their act of will.
Russians are also very social, if someone gets his wage it is praznik(about same as party) for everyone. Average Russian is usually friendly and helpful.
Russian is also heritage to be valued, not often average speaker can express (“OMG i am so wasted”) or (“up yours”) for 1/2 hour without starting to repeat yourself.
I like Russians 😀

Listen to Russian Composers and especially russian folk music like Tchikovsky, borodin or korsakov. Read famous Russian Literature like Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, and The Brothers Karamozov. Improve on your history by going to http://www.Veoh.com and look up documentaries about the Czar. I watched an 8 part doc on russian history that was very enlightening. I am part Russian and was curious and thats how I learned. Russian History is tragic and epic, the story of a people constantly struggling to make ends meet and yet achieving monstrous goals while making huge sacrifices. Once you have done all this it will also help you to understand the modern day political climate, the russian revolution, etc, etc. Good luck and have fun!
