How do Russian and USSR flags differ?

Question by BraceXforXImpact: Russian flags?? Flag of Russia/Ussr?
OKay so i’m currently doing a project on Russia.
On my title page i need to put a flag.
But when i looked up the flag i got 2 different ones…
the ‘Russia’ flag and the USSR flag.
What one would i put, cause i’m not even sure what the Ussr is??
Please help

The current flag is Russian flag. USSR was a country that Russia (official name is Russian Federation) was once part of. USSR no longer exists: it broke into many independent countries, Russia being one of them.

USSR does not exist anymore.

Though USSR flag is appropriate if your project is about Soviet Russia 1917-1991.

I hope I can help. If you are doing a project about Russia/Россия ( (Russian Federation/Российская Федерация) you would use his flag. This is the flag of Russia 1721 – 1917/1991-Present. Note the period between 1721-1917 is know as Imperial Russia/Российская империя

The flag you may also get is the red one with the hammer and sickle. Like this…

This was the flag of the Soviet Union/Советский Союз aka USSR/CCCP aka Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics/Союз Советских Социалистических Республик. This was a union of several states including Russia. The flag you see in the link above is the flag of the Soviet Union (as a whole) not of Soviet Russia, meaning Russia as a Soviet Republic. This flag represented the entire union not just Russia so you would not use this flag to represent Russia.

Another thing. Between 1858—1883 during the period of the Russian Empire this flag was used. White/Yellow/Black

russia’s flag is three bars, white on top, blue in the middle (yeltsin had a powder-blue-it is now a deeper blue) and red on the bottom.
the ussr flag was the hammer and sickle (symbols of industry and agriculture) on a red field.
the ussr was 15 republics, latvia, lithuania, estonia, ukraine (which was never before a political area, just a land area- hence the ukraine) like in usa the great basin… tajikistan, uzbekistan, armenia, georgia, kazakstan, moldova, azerbaijan, kirghistan, turkministan, byelorus (white russia) and of course the biggest of all, russia.
