How do the various vodka brands differ from each other?

Question by dardekkis: How do the various brands of vodka differ from each other?
Say you take a few different brands of unflavored vodka and compare them…would there be much of a difference? I know that lower grade vodka has more of a “kick back” than the good stuff but would that be the only variation?

    Not every vodka is born in the Land of the Wolf. Check out Eristoff’s legacy.

    Firstly you have the raw ingredients. The cheep brand will use molasses or corn with the more expensive ones using wheat, rye, barley, potatoes or even grapes. Potato vodkas tend to have a great creaminess while wheat offers smoothness and rye has a greater clarity. Some, Ultimat for example, use a blend wheat, potatoes and rye to get the best of all worlds. The water used
    does, of course, play a part in the end flavor. Many of the better brands use deminerlised well, spring or glacial melt water so as to not overpower the delicate flavor of the distillate.

    Next comes the distillation and filtration. The use of pot stills tends to be more common in the production of premium vodka and many brands are now distilled three or four times. Once distilled it is often filtered through a variety of materials with the most common being charcoal or quartz.

    All this is before you even get into the traditional and modern flavored varieties…

    If your wanting to taste a few different types i would say go for;
    Luksusowa – A very creamy potatoe vodka made from specially selected potatoes from along the baltic coast and well water.
    Krolevska – Again from Poland but this time made from rye with more clarity.
    Stolichnaya Gold – This is a wheat based vodka from Russia.

    There are some truly excellent vodkas out there (Ultimat for example) but few bartenders seem to know much about them, never mind having the knowledge to suggest them to customers.

    For the most part the same variations you might find between different brands of bottled water. The reason being is that most flavors come from the water used to dilute it down to 40%.

    What they distill is pretty meaningless as multiple distillation and filtration runs removes practically all flavor. Many vodka companies don't even distill their own spirit but buy it bulk from a couple main suppliers. So many brands might use the exact same alcohol base.

    just depends on how many times they're distilled. i've seen tests where people have bought cheap vodka and put it through a Brita water filter a few times and taste tests couldn't tell the difference between that and much more expensive vodka.
