Steel wool, files, and hand grenades will damage the gun. Bronze bristle brushes will not. Inside the barrel or outside, consider leaving rust to fill up the pores which may have gotten large diameter and deep. Or if the rust is slight, use BAM or some other oven cleaner which contains a small ammt of Sulfamic acid, and do a little rubbing with it, ONLY down to where no deep pores are emptied of "rust filler". The steel will be unaffected.

If it is rusty already, it is already damaged. Light rust can be removed with just your fingerprints and some good oil. Heavier rust might require some 0000 steel wool. If it requires more than that, just be satisfied with a few pits.

Is it even possible to damage an AK?

Use non-soapy steel or bronze wool 0000 grade and a good oil.

funny you asked, my grandpa just passed away, and i inherited some various guns from him. one is an old crickett style .22 LR, and the inside of the barrell was FULL of rust. all you need is a cleaning rod, a box of little barrell cleaning patches, some good ol' hoppes solvent, and about a half hour of time. dont go crazy with a bristle, get as much rust out of the barrell with the cleaning patches as you can. when you notice a dramatic decrease of rust stains on the patches (it may take dozens of patches), use more solvent and try the bristle. Use your best judgement on this one, I personally wouldnt fire it if the rust has caused serious damage to the barrell. hope this helps and good luck

Would that be INSIDE or OUTSIDE the barrel?

Most gun specific cleaning solvents will remove light surface rust when rubbed with a rag. If the rust is deeper and has created pits, the only real way to remove all of it is to sandblast the metal… there are products you can apply yourself now that will protect gun metals far better than bluing ever could, such as Duracoat and Cerakote… or there are plenty of gun refinishers out there that can Parkerize the metal for you for between 100-200 bucks usually… then rust will be virtually eliminated… but the surface must be properly prepared first..
