How do you use word stress in Russian language?

Question by Kevin: How do you use word stress in Russian?
I’m a native English speaker, and I’m having a bit of trouble grasping stress in Russian. I’m not even completely sure I understand word stress in English.

For instance, how do you pronounce a stressed syllable of a word in Russian differently than when it is not stressed?

here’s a tip: whenever you say the letter O in a word, if the syllable containing it is stressed, you will pronounce it “OH”, but if the containing syllable is not stressed, you will pronounce it “AH”.
