Well Moscow isn’t exactly the coldest of all the Russian cities but it does get quite cold.

The building materials that are used for housing are a lot sturdier and provide more insulation. Hot water pipes are used to heat certain things like bathrooms- so instead of a radiator the pipes would go against the outside of a wall. They are also used to heat floors in some upscale apartments.

Traditionally Russian food is very hearty to provide energy in winter times but it has always been limited do to the types and amounts of food that can be grown during a relatively short spring/summer/and fall.

Clothing is very warm in the winter that’s why you would see a lot of fur coats and hats. They provide the most warmth. Layering is also very common int he winter months.

As far as outdoor activities are concerned- skiing is very big, especially cross country. Kids will often go skiing during gym class. Other winter sports such as hokey are also very well developed.

All of this applies to the rest of the country as well by the way..
