First off
Screw builds are not inferior to rivet builds a type 8 screw is far stronger than a rivet , if you want a rivet build just put a dab of JB weld in the screw head and call it one of it makes you feel better
It also does not take lots of skill or tools to build a good quality AK, especially if you buy a 100% receiver
Milled receivers are about $ 600
Quality stamped receivers are about $ 100
Double hook trigger groups are about $ 35 to $ 40 http://www.afmo.com/.
If you can get a VEPR barrel it would be worth the upgrade if not stick with a chrome lined Romanian or Chinese fro less than $ 100
Kits when you can find them are running around $ 300
I have two Rommies left and one Yugo
For a milled receiver you are looking at about $ 1000 for you own build
VEPRs the high standard in AKs go for a little more than that
For a stamped receiver you are looking at around $ 450
Which may be worth he effort
I'm building another one this weekend from a kit I bought years ago at $ 89

Well you can't really build your own in the same sense as you can "build" an AR15. The receiver is the tricky part because of all the rivets used to assemble it and connect it to the buttstock, front trunnion, and trigger group. There are screw build kits out there but they are inferior to rivet builds. You can buy milled receiver AK's which are of higher quality than stamped ones that would be one upgrade but you will still need to find a competent AK builder to assemble it. I suppose you could find somebody to make you a match grade barrel but I don't think the result would justify the price. Better triggers are available and you could have the bolt and carrier chromed but after all it's an AK and what they are known for is dependability not accuracy. You can put a dress on it but it's still a pig. You can buy a nice milled receiver AK for about $ 1100 with a great finish and pretty polished furniture. If you wanted to upgrade any part of the rifle they will be only to glad to take your money. The other option is to switch to 223 and get a Galil Golani Rifle an AK with Israeli know how inside.
Sorry anybody promoting the use of JB Weld is a hack and a Primitive Pete. The same kind of guy that uses a screwdriver for everything but turning a screw. Screw builds ARE inferior and without a drill press it's a royal pain not to mention having to be handy with a tap oh about 12 to 20 times depending on the model. That's why screw builds will always be done by hacks and rivet builds done by machinists.
