Sonia tends not to live in her head nearly as much as he does. He spends so much time agonizing over his decisions and trying to justify his actions to himself. She doesn’t exhibit that. She lives her life without the constant internal attempts at moralizing her every action. Also, it is through her that he comes to see the wrong he has committed and through her and her faith that he is able to face and accept his punishment.
