How long it takes to become fluent in Russian?

Question by littlegirl!: How long would it take me to become fluent in Russian?
I am thinking of going to live there for a while, to learn about the culture and hopefully pick up the language (both my parents were russian & i’m interested in my heritage)

Anyone who knows about this kind of thing please help, because I want to know what I’m getting myself into hahaha

Thanks everyone!

It depends how quick you learn … but if i were in your situation i would go for it. Learning about a different culture is always interesting.

Good Luck : )

You could speak basic Russian after a couple of years hard work with a native Russian teacher. To be fluent is a going to take many years.

It took me three years just to start understanding the simple things that they say. The cases that words take will take a while to master. Some people learn it in four or five years, others take longer. College classes are really quick for learning, if you have a good teacher on your own it might take four years.

Go there as a student rather than trying to work. You can stay longer, otherwise you're limited to 90 at a time, no more than 180 days annually.

Experts say that it takes about 7-10 years to truly be "fluent" with the ability to think in Russian as well as speak/read/write. Time of course varys by student but in 3-5 years you should be okay on speaking and writing. Here is some help: http://russianreport.wordpress.com/russian-langua…

All children in Russia take Russian Language courses during every single term while they are in school, i.e. 10-12 years. If you want to achieve the same level of competence, prepare yourself for a similar effort. Of course, you can learn just the basics in a year or two.
