They will be used until the ones that have been made have worn out. Don’t sing the praises too much though and give all of the credit to the Soviet gun designer. This, like anything that the soviets produced was stolen from the design from another country. The Germans came up with this design in the late years of WWII and the Soviets stole the plans when Roosevelt gave them Eastern Germany.
The Engines that powered their BTR-60s at least up to 1982 (and probably their BTR-70s) were exact copies of 1934 vintage Chrysler heavy truck engines from the trucks that the US supplied to them in WWII under lend/lease or just plain “give-a-way”.

The AK-47 has not been used for more than 50 years. It was replaced by the AKM in 1959, which was replaced by the AK-74 in 1979.
The M16 however is still in use and has been for nearly 50 years.

No gun in sight that will be preferred over this rifle made in 1947. I’m sure there been a few mods on it. Its made in over 20 countries, or at least close copies of it.
