Question by Amber: How often is Russian cursive actually used?
I have just recently started studying Russian, and very early on I came across a chapter on Russian cursive. I know I will need to learn the cursive in order to be well rounded in Russian, but I was wondering how much it was actually used.
Is it like English cursive where it is used for little more than signatures, or is it an actual part of everyday life? Thanks in advance!

It is all my grandmother writes in. She is from Russia and taught Russian at Georgia Tech.

Every bit of actual writing by people I’ve ever seen was in cursive. The printed letters are just like printed letters in English, they are used for books. From what I’ve seen, people write cursive, and you should learn to also.
Actually, I found learning Russian cursive to give me a fascinating look at not only what really makes the Russian letters what they are and what they aren’t (for example, why does the “pe” look like an “n” in English? what it is about that letter that makes Russians see them as being the same) but also insight into how our own cursive works.

You are only supposed to use Russian cursive. Printed Russian is for typed material.
