The sleeper train is fine and actually reasonably comfortable. St Petes is a beautiful place but be warned that most restaurants etc have their menu in Russian only whereas Moscow has a lot more westernised ideals and even have a Mcdonalds outside the Kremlin. I loved both places and the people were really nice and helpful. You must go see the underground stations while you are there as they are so beautiful.

I hope you are not traveling alone. We took the overnight train from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We were with a group. We did encounter a couple of rude Russians, but our Russian speaking friends put them in their place. The train wasn't bad, though the female conductor did lock the bathroom in our car around 4 a.m. So people had to go into the next car.
Most of the people we met were very friendly and welcoming to tourists (remember we're bringing in money).
However, people in our group did encounter a few unpleasant instances. In St. Petersburg, gypsy children tried to get at a fannypack.
Leaving the Moscow Circus, one lady in our group had her wallet taken out of her purse.
I think it is like traveling anywhere, you need to stay alert and watch for possible difficulties, but more than likely you will have a wonderful time.
Bon Voyage!
