How were the Romanov’s identified? and why couldn’t regular DNA profiling be used to identify the family?

They took the DNA of a living descendant and compared it to the DNA of the bone marrow and bloodstains on the suspected bodies.

They were identified comparing their DNA to that of a distant, living relative, of which there are many. They could nto be identified directly because we do not have their DNA already on file. There was nothing to compare their DNA to for a direct match. I believe anthropological forensics also confirms that the bodies found fit the general descriptions of the family members (height, shape of skull, etc)
