Is Moscow a safe place to travel?

Question by Carson A: Is Moscow a good and safe place to travel?
I heard that Moscow had changed a lot and become a city comparable to London or Paris or other advanced cities. Is it true? But I also I heard that there are organizations there kill and pick on foreigners, like whoever not slavic or Russian, so is it also a safe place to travel?
The thign I concern about is because I am an Asian American and do not speak good Russian althought know I know some, so am I an easy target for their racist gangs?

If you’re going to just fly in, stay at a hotel, see some sights and fly out there shouldn’t be any problems. Group travel might also be without any incident whatsoever. But, to drive there, or ride the train… hmmm, I’d have to think long and hard about it. I’d definitely leave some stuff at home such as an expensive camera and learn how to take my windshield wipers off at night to take in with me. Don’t go nightclubbing.

Moscow is beautiful and fantastic city….., but ….. maybe I am crazy but I wouldn't go there alone. And even in a group you shouldn't walk around in the dark. Foreign language speaking people is an easy target. Keep close to the hotel or if you have some Russian friends, keep close to them. You have to know some rules before you go there. (In every big city are a lot of criminals).

I lived there too for a few years and I didn't have any problems, but I can speak some Russian and have white skin. Its best to have local friend to help show you round, wonderful city!

I lived there for a while. It is as safe as London or Paris, and you shouldn't expect any attention from racist gangs if you have white skin. Public transport is safe, but Russians drive like crazy people and the roads are death traps.

Unfortunately, darker skinned travellers may have problems.

Moscow is one of the safest cities in the world – compared to it Los Angeles is in some districts a cut-throat place
