Question by Brigid O’ Somebody: Is Russian making a comeback as an important language to know?
For years people have advised me to drop Russian Studies and study Chinese instead. But I am glad that I stood by Russian.
I am not Russian, but Irish-American. I also study Spanish.

I don't know if it is or not, but I want to learn russian myself. French and Spanish lost their appeal to me once everyone else started learning them..and russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world. Can't believe english is 4th!

Unfortunately, Russian is declining in importance after the fall of the Soviet Union. Having said that, let me say that Russian still is and will always be one of the most important languages on the planet. The rich treasure trove of Russian literature alone will ensure that. It's still spoken by over 185 million people worldwide, is one of the primary languages of the UN, the Russian Federation is, someone correct me if I'm wrong, the 11th? largest economy in the world, and Russian is still the lingua franca of the former Communist bloc of nations (eastern Europe and the 14 former Soviet Republics besides Russia).
And remember, that just because a language is declining in importance that does not mean that there is not a valid reason for learning it. Each language, from Greenlandic to Mandarin Chinese is a completely different way to express the human experience. Any language is important.
My opinion, for what it's worth.
