Is there any chance that Russia could reinstate its Monarchy?

Question by Mr. Atoz: Do you think there’s any chance that Russia could reinstate its Monarchy?
Could you see this happening?

I have heard that the Orthodox Church would like it to happen.

The Russian Orthodox Church probably WOULD like it, but I’d say that the chances are nil.

Russia hasn’t even managed to establish a democratic republic yet. The very last thing it needs is a monarchy. It wouldn’t know what to do with a constitutional monarchy, which is the only kind it could possibly have in this day and age. And such a monarchy would be totally irrelevant to Russia’s needs and problems.

Answer by Andy F
Anyone with a claim to the throne of Russia would be mad to accept it considering what the Russians did to the last Tsar of Russia and his family

If Russia ever did go back to a Monarchy, I know of at least one descendent of Alexander I of Russia, who is living, and has children. I’m not naming names, so don’t ask, but it isn’t me.

Doesn’t look like there is any chance at this time. Still to much chaos.

I think it to be unlikely, but not completely impossible. Culturally, it might actually be a good fit. These are people who really want to be ruled. Obviously, it could end up a disaster if the wrong person became czar, but it might actually work.

Actually contrary to what the people before me said it’s becoming more likely everyday. In a poll taken in 2006 it showed that 20% of Russians supported monarchical restoration. I’m sure by now the numbers have grown. Some of Russia’s most respectable public figures have declared themselves as Monarchist, most notably Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov. And in general Russians are growing more proud of their Imperial past. Also there are many Russians who could be convinced to support monarchical restoration. If the Russian Monarchist movement can organize under a candidate for the throne and have good party leadership then it can become a very serious force in Russian Politics.

Democracy is a form of government which will never work in Russia. You can see that in Yeltisns Democracy greedy people came to power who stole from the government and put the money in their own pockets. No other government other than Monarchy has worked for Russia. A major problem in Russia is the massive corruption. Do you honestly think democracy can stop the corruption it created ? The only person who can put an end to this is a Tsar like Nicholas I.

I believe the church and a significant ratio of the Russian people would like that, but is very difficult to happen. (It require the President to willingly propose a referendum to the Russian people if they want to change the Constitution that has him as a President….).

I actually read a novel with a far-fetched but relatively realistic scenario, where a new Czar is reinstated. For anyone interested reading it this is Steve Berry’s “The Romanov Prophecy”. It;s actually a very good book.

Yes, Putin’s coronation should come within the next year or two. They are looking for a suitable tailor to shorten the ermine robes.

Unlikely as Putin and the other guy are relishing power too much.

Actually this problem was discussed in our Society. But the representatives of the Romanov’s family prefer to live and receive an education in France or London, they rejected the opportunity to send their little son to Russian military academy, we don’t need foreigners on the throne of Russia. This people so called Romanov’s offsprings, are not Russians any more. Tell me, why if they want to have the Russian throne? they don’t live in Russia? They do not help Russian people, do not take any part in the life of the country. Or you ask about Post card monarchy like in Europe?
