Question by Phil A: Is there much snow in Sochi, Russia?
I imagine there would be some snow in winter. but not enough for a winter Games.
Indorr skating, etc sure, but are the skiing events in another part of Russia closer to Mt Elbrus and more snow ?
And isn’t this region of Russia, on the border with Georgia, a region with ethnic tensions ( Abkhazia), perhaps not as much as in Ingushetia, Chechnya, etc, but yet another politically questionable choice of Olympic venue.

This choice was a surprise to many, they will need to travel some to do outdoor events.

I lived in Sochi for five years. There is enough snow in the mountains, not far from the seashore.
As for ethnic tensions. As far as I know major war happened in early 90s. I traveled to Abkhazia couple years ago and from my civilian point of view it was rather safe.
