why is that story ironic and how the leading paragraph relate to the final paragraph?

it is ironic because Pahom tries to get more and more land (because he is greedy) and in the end he ends up with no land, other than the 6 feet he is buried in
the first and last paragraphs add to the irony because in the first one it demonstrates the greed and materialism of some people and the last paragraph shows what those qualities lead to…6 feet in the ground

I believe that Tolstoy is referring to the dash(-) in between your graveyard that makes the difference. Ex. Here lies Bob Dow 1801-1870.
You as a Human being are taken well care of when you are born and will be taken care of within 6 feet of land when yu die, but that dash in between is your life and it matters the most of what you do with it.
Thus Tolstoy wants you to think about how much land do you need, not physically but mentally for you to make that claim for you dash(-).
