A very difficult question. Best advice – you need to contact their Consulate for an advice.
The Russian government reintroduced many of the limitations which existed during the Communist regime. For example, for longer stays you will need to provide either an invitation from a Russian party or some other proof that you are visiting as a tourist. If you are planning to stay in Moscow for over a couple of months, check with the Consulate if you will require a registration, as non-Moscovites can be subjected to constant checks and even abuse from the Militia (police) patrols if the don’t hold a Moscow residence permit. This applies to Moscow only though – other cities do not require permits.
Additionally, check if on your way you will be crossing the borders of other countries of the former Soviet Union, as you might need additional visas and other paperwork.
Good luck, hope you enjoy it, and make sure to visit St. Petersburg – one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. And make sure you take some warm clothes with you – last time I was there about 5 years ago it turned -30C…
