Russia & Germany – cool but there were mutually profitable trade links depite Hitler banning the German Communist Party and imprisoning or executing those leaders who had not fled to Moscow. They did not even warm much with the signing of the non-aggression pact as for Hitler it was a short -term tactical move to check a possible Anglo- French agreement with Stalin, and of course Stalin was as distrustful of Hitler as he was of everyone else. Then Hitler invaded the Soviet union and all hell broke loose.
Before WW2, the British government was anti-communist and diplomatic relations were cool but correct. As WW2 neared, the question of an alliance with the Soviet Union was raised, a low-level delegation was sent to Moscow but the British government was more interested in appeasing Hitler than in a policy of collective security with other European countries. When Hitler invaded Russia, this changed dramatically, and Britain even sent aid to Russia which it could ill afford at that stage of the war.
