Question by kohlgill: What is the Russian quote about guests that talk and won’t leave?
I remember reading a Russian quote about unwanted guests that stop to talk and won’t leave. It compares the bleakest landscape of the Russian steppe with the bleak feelings of an accidental host when something like this happens. It might have been Chekhov who said it, or some other Russian author.

I’m Russian Native Speaker but I can’t remember the quote you are describing here.
There is Chekhov’s tale “Drame on the hunt” and there is a quote in it: “The guest who came not in the suitable time (unwanted guest) is worse than the Tartar”, which means some special features of the character of some Tartar people and the treatment of Russians to it.
there is also a quote which compares unwanted guest with a bone in one’s throat. and even many others, but unfortunately I couldn;t find the one you are talking about here.
