Pimsleur is pretty decent,,,I also used barrons express track to russian because it has textbooks and practice. It helps if you have russian friends to practice with.
Also,,,you will have a hard time with a. grammar b. prononciation the kh (х), zh, (ж) shch (щ) and iy (ы) sounds are very hard if any of your languages dont have the equivalent.
The prononciation requires alot of practice.

I learned it by reading a textbook(Lonely Planet Publishers) and talking to Russians. Good luck!

Get Barry Farber's "how to learn and language," which'll help set you up with a program of language self-study. If you want to save money, use your local library's inter-library loan system (if you're in the U.S.) to get all your language materials.
Also, please realize that Russian grammar is a bear, but if you learn Russian, you'll be well on your way to learning another slavic language. Serbian or Bulgarian anyone?
For an audio program, pimsleur is good as always.

Marry a Russian. You will get plenty of free lessons without leaving your home plus surprise tests every day when you argue.

How much you can learn depends on your other languages. Russian has a complex grammatical structure, and vowels that are difficult to pronounce for English speakers. Rosetta Stone software system is excellent. You don't have to leave home.. but if you don't leave home, why learn Russian?
