In the 900’s, two Greek Orthodox bishops or priests from Constantinople named Cyril (Kyril?) and Methodius travelled to Russia to convert them. At that time, Russian was a spoken language, not a written one. St. Cyril devised an alphabet by which Russian could be written. It has since been known as the Cyrillic alphabet. St. Cyril translated the Bible into Russian.

For the rest you must study Byzantine history. I recommend George Ostrogorsky, “History of the Byzantine State.”
