Question by Jay L: What’s the best/cheapest way to get a train ticket from Moscow to St. Petersburg (and back)?
I’m wondering if it’s best to just get the ticket when I’m in Russia, or if it’s better for me to book the ticket online before? Also, is there a student discount? I plan on taking the overnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg and back, so any advice on what train/class to get would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Get the platzkart with no seat reservation. It’s not the most convenient and “safe” since it’s a big open corridor. So never leave your computer, etc. unattended. Buy tickets directly from the train station, instead of booking through an agency. It’s cheap but you have to fall in line for at least an hour to get your ticket. Check the schedules ahead. I would just buy them online and take the print out to the station to claim.

Student discount? No of course not. A cheaper alternative aside from bus transportation would be renting a car. Plus cheaper than taxis.
