First of all, a true Martini is made with Gin, not vodka.
If one were to substitute the Gin with vodka, there would be less flavor.

Personally, I feel that a classic martini is gin, vodka is ok, but as someone else said, not as much flavor. I have had dirty martinis with gin, but not too dirty. I like the flavor of gin and use big olives because I enjoy the taste of olives as well.
Your Friendly Jewish says
A REAL martini is gin and vermouth, period. THEN the girly-girl fakies came out and here comes the vodka. No longer a martini. AT ALL.
Brett G says
Other than the obvious……taste…….. One is a martini with olive garnish<Gin>
…………one is a Gimlett with onion garnish< Vodka>
jzfox says
One is a traditional martini (Gin) and the other is a vodka martini. Gin is usually associated with the olives. Vodka martinis usually have a lemon twist. Can't really say one is better than the other, it all depends on your taste. They both are pretty strong as you are not diluting the alcohol taste with juice or soda, like many mixed drinks do. If you want a good dirty martini, then use decent Gin (Bombay or Tanqueray are good), dry vermouth and a splash of olive juice (from the jar of olive's). Then a few olive's for effect.

Well if you ask a martini purist they'll tell you that a martini is made with Gin, not vodka.
I prefer gin because to me, a vodkatini has very little flavor to it at all besides just alcohol.
I'm a huge fan of the dirty martini and I always go with gin (I recommend Beefeater or if you want to go with the original, Plymouth), it works perfectly with the olive brine
My dirty Martini recipe
1. In a cocktail shaker filled about 2/3 full with ice pour in .5 oz of dry vermouth
2. Shake with just the vermouth and then pour all of it out, whatever sticks to the ice and the shakers is exactly how much you need
3. Pour in 2.5 oz of good gin and a splash of olive brine
4. Shake again and strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with 2 green olives (or more if you like).
Deadly Feasts says
juniper berry flavor
gin is better for the dirty thang
Corvato says
gin has more herbs added… likely won't taste the olive brine as much
i usually suggest: Gin for a standard martini, (stirred)
and vodka for a dirty one (shaken hard and long)
John Stalvern says
Vodka is flavor-neutral (aside from the alcohol). Gin tastes kinda piney.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of gin, so I'd go for the vodka one. However, the classic martini is gin, so you'd probably want to stick with that.
