Question by Alex: What is the equivalent of a 19th century Russian Rouble?
At the time Crime and Punishment takes place, what is the US Dollar equivalent of one Russian Rouble in today’s terms? It seems that now the Rouble is worth 4 cents, but what about then?

During the 19th Century, foreign exchange was set against the gold standard. The US dollar was always set at 0.0484 troy ounces of gold.
During 1817-1885, the Russian Rouble was pegged to 0.0386 troy oz. gold. Therefore, 1 Rouble = $ 0.797.
In 1886 Russia joined the Latin Monetary Union at the rate of 5 Roubles = 20 French Francs. So during 1886-1896, 1 Rouble was worth 0.0373 troy oz. gold = 0.771 US Dollars.
