There was not much action in the Cold War, but Russia was trying to become the only "superpower". Russia was competing with the US, but failed as they simply ran out of money. With the end of the Warsaw Pact, the former "eastern bloc" countries broke away from Russia.

Since the Cold War was an ideological conflict as well as a military one, the main objective of the USSR during the Cold War was the spread of Communism through military means. For Communism to succeed politically and economically, it had to be global, according to the Communists.

As far as the USSR failing, it doesn't necessarily mean that Communism in itself failed. Since Karl Marx wrote the "Communist Manifesto" for industrialized Europe, it wasn't meant for agrarian Russia. The version of Communism that Russia created became known as Leninism. As time and leaders changed, each one put their own spin on the government in the USSR, veering more and more away from what Marx had originally conceived. So when the USSR collapsed, it was their version of Communism that failed, not Communism itself.

Besides, isn't the most populous country in the world still Communist?

Yes, I know it's called Maoism.

No, I'm not a Communist. It's possible to understand something without supporting it.

I'm not sure if this is a homework question, so you shouldn't use this because it is just an opinion. The USSR believed that the communist system was superior to the capitalist economic model and it would be just a matter of time before capitalism collapsed. It turned out that it was just a matter of time before communism collapsed. Capitalism is still the only way to distribute wealth, and it will remain that way.
